Short description |
|
The outline tablets describe DAY 1 of the nuntarriyašḫa- festival in a particularly terse manner: “In Katapa, on the first day, a great assembly (takes place). (This is) day 1.” Hardly any other day of the festival is presented with such brevity. Moreover, and in contrast to the other instances involving great assemblies, no specific information is given regarding the location, where exactly that one is held. It seems reasonable to assume, however, that the setting was the local ḫalentu- complex.
Despite the lack of any specific data, at least one text can be – with due caution – identified as a day-tablet for the celebrations on DAY 1.

History of publication |

A brief overview of DAY 1 is offered by Nakamura M. 2002a: 82f. who considered several possible candidates for day-tablets (IBoT 2.16, KUB 10.31, KBo 20.87), but ultimately found none convincing.

Historical context |
|
The fact that the celebrations begin in Katapa is an indication that the nuntarriyašḫa- festival was created under Muršili II (Houwink ten Cate Ph.H.J. 1986a: 109f.), the king who frequently resided in Katapa (Popko M. 2001b: 151; Taracha P. 2009a: 140; see also remarks to DAY 3).

General information |
|
The main event of DAY 1 was a great assembly, a long religious ceremony that culminated in a series of god-drinking rites performed by the king or the royal couple in honour of various deities. The general sequence of this event in Katapa can be, for the most part, relatively easily reconstructed, since all great assemblies – regardless of location – followed the same general pattern. However, it is precisely the structural uniformity of the ceremony which prevents the identification of the fragments that specifically refer to the great assembly in Katapa. For examples of this ceremony in different contexts see, e.g., DAY 4 of the nuntarriyašḫa- festival (in Taḫurpa) or 16th day of the AN.DAḪ.ŠUM festival (CTH 612; in Ḫattuša).
