CTH 626.Tg04.6

Festival of Haste (nuntarriyašḫa-). Day 4

introductio

Short description

The sixth version of the day-tablets describing DAY 4 of the nuntarriyašḫa- festival includes two newly identified manuscripts. If correctly interpreted, they provide new information about the early stages of DAY 4, such as the king’s visit to the Garden of Aškašipa near Katapa. In addition, both manuscripts seem to have been written by the same scribe, and may even belong to the same tablet.

History of publication

Ms. B (KUB 10.31) has previously been attributed to the first day of the AN.DAḪ.ŠUM festival (CTH 605). However, since the outline tablets of that festival explicitly state that no celebrations are permitted in Katapa, it is unlikely that KUB 10.31 represents a day-tablet of that festival (see already Kryszeń A. 2020a: 313f.). The similarity of the handwriting and the proposed reading of the colophon point instead to a possible attribution to CTH 626.

Ms. A has not been edited previously.

Tablet characteristics

Judging from the preserved column width, both mss. were originally three-column tablets.

Palaeography and handwriting

Both mss. are written in the New Script, although note a IIIc form of ḪA with one Winkelhaken. More importantly, they seem to show the same handwriting, including the characteristic SAR (with long horizontals) and TA (with pronounced Winkelhaken and very short inner verticals). This suggests they were written by the same scribe, or may even have come from the same tablet.
