Festival of Haste (nuntarriyašḫa-). Day 5

introductio

Short description

As indicated by the opening lines of ms. A (KBo 45.37), which describe the celebrations of DAY 5 in Taḫurpa as “the second day”, Version 2 must originally have encompassed at least two days of festivities. Although this is unexpected and differs significantly from Version 1, the unique paragraph describing the exchange of spears by the royal guards provides strong support for attributing this text to the nuntarriyašḫa- festival (contrary to the opinion of Gordin S. 2015a: 172–174, who attributes ms. A to the AN.DAḪ.ŠUM festival).

The colophon of ms. A mentions the name of the scribe Anuwanza, who is known to have been active during the reign of Ḫattušili III (Torri G. 2020b: 458).

History of publication

Nakamura M. 2002a: 172 briefly commented on KBo 45.37 (still as 53/s), but chose not to include it in his edition. KBo 60.162 (ms. B) was identified by Charles Steitler in 2019. Given the fragment’s very small size and its mention of offerings of dannaš bread, it is not impossible that it actually belongs to Version 1.

Tablet characteristics

As far as can be determined, both mss. were originally three-column tablets.

Palaeography and handwriting

Ms. A is written in the New Script, although it employs the older form of URU, characteristic of Anuwanza. Ms. B is too small for a meaningful analysis.
