CTH 626.Tg27

Festival of Haste (nuntarriyašḫa-). Day 27

introductio

Short description

The celebrations of DAY 27 of the nuntarriyašḫa-festival comprise several events, although not all can be securely reconstructed. The observances include a festival for the Damnaššara deities, a great assembly in the ḫalentu- complex, rites involving the NIN.DINGIR priestess, rites involving the cleaners (LÚ.MEŠŠU.I), and a festival in the temple of Šulinkatte and another sanctuary whose deity is not preserved.

The present edition diverges slightly from Nakamura M. 2002a in its understanding of DAY 27. Nakamura suggests that the NIN.DINGIR priestess visits the House of the ḫapiya- men, based on other texts relating to her activities, such as KBo 10.27 (Nakamura M. 2002a: 37 and 122–124). Other restorations, however, are possible, since the NIN.DINGIR priestess is also known to visit the House of the Chariot Fighters (see DAY 12). Likewise, the exact nature of the cleaners’ activities remains obscure for the time being (although see the section ‘Intertextuality’ below).

The only day-tablets identified so far for DAY 27 refer to the festival for the Damnaššara goddesses.

Version CTH 626.Tg27.1: Festival of Haste (nuntarriyašḫa-). Day 27 (hrsg. von Adam Kryszeń)

History of publication

A brief account of DAY 27, without reference to any possible day-tablets, is offered by Nakamura M. 2002a: 122–124, where the day is numbered as day 23.

Intertextuality

As already observed by Nakamura M. 2002a: 123f., the first (partially) preserved lines of KUB 25.27 col. ii correspond to the events of DAY 27. However, the only securely recoverable information from this passage concerns the offering of one bull and eight sheep, which are provided by the cleaners. This implies that these functionaries celebrated a festival of their own, perhaps in their own institution.

Nakamura M. 2002a: 124 also proposes that the festival in the temple of Šulinkatte is a ḫadauri- festival and cautiously suggests that it is mentioned in several oracle texts, e.g., in KUB 34.48+ F.5+1 obv. i 9′/l. col. 12′–obv. i 15′/l. col. 18′. If this is accepted, then the second, unidentified temple mentioned in the outline tablets would be that of Ḫašammeli.
