CTH 626.Tg29

Festival of Haste (nuntarriyašḫa-). Day 29

introductio

Short description

DAY 29 is one of the most eventful days of the nuntarriyašḫa- festival. It is attested in four outline tablets, with the newly identified manuscripts (Outline.11 and Outline.13) offering previously unavailable information. All celebrations take place in Ḫattuša.

The sole activity of the king is referred to in an unclear sentence: “The king eats from a golden (vessel?)” (see Nakamura M. 2002a: 125 for a different interpretation). The remaining events concern various officials and professional groups: the supervisor of the table attendants celebrates Telipinu in the temple of NISABA; the SANGA priest of Zitḫariya celebrates the great festival for this deity; and the smiths celebrate Antaliya.

The versions of the nuntarriyašḫa-festival represented in Outline.11 and Outline.13 further include rites performed by the NIN.DINGIR priestess, who visits the temples of the Queen, Ḫalmaššuit, Telipinu, and possibly Šulinkatte. The offerings for these celebrations are provided by the ḫapiya- men.

Despite the wealth of information found in the outline tablets, only one day-tablet has so far been tentatively identified for DAY 29.

Texts

Version CTH 626.Tg29.1: Festival of Haste (nuntarriyašḫa-). Day 29 (hrsg. von Adam Kryszeń)

History of publication

In Nakamura M. 2002a: 125–126, DAY 29 is designated as day 25, without any proposed candidates for day-tablets.

The mention of the KI.LAM festival (CTH 627) in the outline tablets for DAY 29 led Houwink ten Cate Ph.H.J. 1988a: 194, followed by Nakamura M. 2002a: 1, to suggest that this festival was incorporated into the nuntarriyašḫa- festival (DAYS 31–33). The issue, however, remains problematic.

On the one hand, no other reference to the KI.LAM festival – a well-known three-day observance – is found in the outline tablets or in any of the day-tablets of CTH 626, making the available evidence insufficient to substantiate this hypothesis. On the other hand, passages in other texts that undoubtedly correspond to events of DAY 29, namely the oracle KBo 31.167+ ii F3 obv. iii 8–19 (CTH 568) and KUB 25.27 ii 13′–25′ (CTH 629), both explicitly mention the KI.LAM festival. Until further evidence comes to light, the relationship between the two observances must therefore remain unresolved.

Intertextuality

As already observed by Nakamura M. 2002a: 123f., the events of DAY 29 clearly correspond to those attested in KUB 25.27 ii 13′–25′. The passages cover all the celebrations mentioned in Outline.10 and Outline.12, while adding information on the required provisions. The additional festivities known from Outline.11 and Outline.13 are not reflected in this text.

The oracle KBo 31.167+ ii F3 obv. iii 8–19 (CTH 568) deals exclusively with the celebrations conducted in the temple of Ḫalki (i.e. NISABA) by the supervisor of the table attendants. Both KUB 25.27 and KBo 31.167+ specify exactly the same number of animals required for these rites.
