CTH 626.Tg31

Festival of Haste (nuntarriyašḫa-). Day 31

introductio

Short description

According to the outline tablets of the nuntarriyašḫa- festival, DAY 31 was organized into three major events: the procession of the deity Ḫalputili; a “holy ablution” in a temple, likely that of Ḫalputili; and the celebration of the Divine Throne conducted by the grooms (LÚ.MEŠšalašḫa-).

So far only one day-tablet (KUB 54.39) has been identified for DAY 31.

History of publication

For an overview of DAY 31 (designated as the 27th day of the festival), see Nakamura M. 2002a: 128–130, without any proposed day-tablets. The identification of KUB 54.39 as a day-tablet for DAY 31 was suggested by Taracha P. 2017a: 114.

Intertextuality

The description of DAY 31 in the outline tablets corresponds closely to KUB 25.27 iii 9–12 (CTH 629), which additionally specifies the grooms’ contribution to the festival.

The celebration of the divine Throne by the grooms is also attested in the oracles VSNF 12.17 obv. iii? 11–17 and KBo 31.167+ F3+1 obv. iii 25/2′–27/4′ (both CTH 568).

Finally, note KUB 12.4 iv 7–10 (CTH 529), a cult inventory stating that the “(cult image of) Ḫalputili travels up to the holy (place).” (Houwink ten Cate Ph.H.J. 1988a: 175; Cammarosano M. 2021a: 212f.). In this context, however, it is the men of the palace of Ḫattuša, not the grooms, who are responsible for providing the offerings (see already Nakamura M. 2002a: 128 with n. 257.
