CTH 626.Tg33

Festival of Haste (nuntarriyašḫa-). Day 33

introductio

Short description

According to the outline tablets, DAY 33 includes several independent celebrations taking place in different parts of Ḫattuša as well as outside the capital. In Ḫattuša, a great assembly is held in the House of the Chariot Fighters and the queen organizes a swine-festival under the canopies in the House of the Treasurers. At the same time or at a later stage, the treasurers and the chief of the old women travel to Arinna to burn the ganzuwa-, an object that could be burned, sawn or used as an ornament. Finally, possibly also in Arinna, the chief of the treasurers celebrates the Queen of the Storehouse.

So far, only day-tablets relating to the ganzuwa- burning have been identified for DAY 33.

Texts

Version CTH 626.Tg33.1: Festival of Haste (nuntarriyašḫa-). Day 33 (hrsg. von Adam Kryszeń)

History of publication

For an overview of DAY 33 (designated as the 29th day of the festival) see Nakamura M. 2002a: 132–134, where no candidates for day-tablets are proposed. On the alternative interpretation of the ‘swine-festival’ as a ‘forest-festival’, see Nakamura M. 2002a: 133.

Intertextuality

Two oracles appear to contain passages corresponding to some of the events of DAY 33: VSNF 12.27 obv. iii? 18–22 mentions the ganzuwa- festival and the chief of the treasurers, while KBo 31.167+ F3 iv 23′–27′ may refer to the chief of the treasurers celebrating the Queen of the Storehouse, although the name of the functionary in this fragment is restored.

Interestingly, no events corresponding to DAY 33 are attested in KUB 25.27. The text proceeds directly from the celebrations parallel to DAY 32 to those of DAY 35.
