Festival of Haste (nuntarriyašḫa-). Day 5

introductio

Kurzbeschreibung

According to the colophons of Version 1, the series was composed for an occasion on which King Tudḫaliya (IV) – introduced in the text with an extended filiation – travels to Arinna to celebrate the nuntarriyašḫa- festival. This composition is among the few produced specifically for this festival, rather than representing pre-existing autumn festival tablets later incorporated within the nuntarriyašḫa- festival tradition. For similar examples, see, e.g. DAY 6 or 13.

This version, represented by four manuscripts, describes the activities of the king, leaving aside those of the queen.

History of publication

All manuscripts belonging to this version were previously edited by Nakamura M. 2002a: 171–187. The present edition additionally incorporates KUB 20.70, a text which Nakamura M. 2002a: 277–279 classified only as a candidate for DAY 5. Since, however, mss. A–C belong to the first tablet and the colophon of KUB 20.70 reads “Second tablet”, it is assumed here that all mss. form a single series.

Tablet characteristics

As far as can be determined, all mss. were originally three-column tablets.

Palaeography and handwriting

Apart from ms. A, written in the New Script, the manuscripts of Version 1 show the Late New Script. They do not, however, appear to share the same handwriting.
