Bird oracle fragment by the augur Kurša-Kuruntiya

introductio

Short description

This fragment consists of seven fragmentary lines of a bird oracle report, signed by the augur Kurša-Kuruntiya. We can read part of the introductory formula “let the birds …”, of the flight report, and the final interpretation by Kurša-Kuruntiya (“(the birds) excluded it”).

Texts

Manuscript AKBo 40.492015/cBk. A

Literature from the Konkordanz

  • Y. Sakuma, Diss., 2009: II 443f.

History of publication

The previous edition by Sakuma Y. 2009b, II, 444 proposes several restorations based on rules of frequency and parallel attestations. Our edition is more conservative, and includes only those restoration which are virtually certain.

Autography: H. Otten – C. Rüster (KBo 40).

Tablet characteristics

The lower part of the fragment is blank, which means that this tablet, like several other oracle reports, included blank or partially blank paragraphs.

Palaeography and handwriting

NS (jh.). Too small for a meaningful palaeographic analysis. There are no evident late sign forms, apart perhaps IT.

Intertextuality

The name of the augurmkur-š]a-D⸢KAL⸣(Kurša-Kuruntiya) is attested in KBo 53.110 rev. III 23, 40, where he is responsible of several observations. This tablet is a large fragment of combined oracle reports with bird oracles and KIN oracles, concerning a deity angry for sins committed in his/her temple. The text mention several other individuals during the inquiry, including two GUDU-priests (Wanni and Zullanni) and other people, women and men (on this document see a brief discussion in Taggar-Cohen A. 2006a, 237-238).
