Three Hittite conjurations parallel to the preceding

introductio

Short description

The first conjuration of this fragment correlates with the one on the obverse of KUB 35.145, but extends further, continuing the list of divine attributes that were extinguished. The reverse contains the final part of another conjuration, partially overlapping with the first one. The initial part of the third conjuration closely resembles the one on the reverse of KUB 35.145.

Texts

+ A₂+ KBo 52.215+ 681/uT.I

History of publication

The first fragment was published in transliteration in Starke F. 1985a: 232–233 as a pregnancy spell. The join between the two fragments is proposed in the table of contents of Corti C. 2009a (KBo 52).

Tablet characteristics

The two-sided fragment preserves the right edge of the tablet. Judging by the reconstructed width of the column, the tablet was two-columned, which implies that we are dealing with the fragments of column ii and column iii.

Palaeography and handwriting

New Script

Linguistic characteristics

This Hittite fragment contains several Luwian foreign words.

Text transmission

The fragment A₂ was found in a secondary context in Temple 1, which implies that the first fragment was likewise found in Temple 1.

Intertextuality

The first and the second conjurations display parallels to the first conjuration of CTH 765.9.A, while the incipit of the third conjuration is nearly identical to that of the second conjuration of CTH 765.9.A.

General information

The conjuration of column ii and the first conjuration of column iii are directed at various demonic beings. The second conjuration of column iii mentions a human perpetrator.
