History of publication

This text was published in transliteration in Starke F. 1985a: 228 as a pregnancy spell.

Tablet characteristics

This is a one-sided fragment. Although no edges are preserved, the large width of the restored column, approximately 12–13 cm, suggests that we are dealing with a one-column tablet. The available fragment features a colophon of the first composition and an incipit of the second one, separated with a double paragraph line.

Palaeography and handwriting

Middle Script

Linguistic characteristics

The colophon of the first conjuration and the incipit of the second conjuration are in Hittite, the rest of the preserved text is in Luwian.

Text transmission

This fragment was found in Building B of Büyükkale.

Intertextuality

The first conjuration of CTH 766.2.2 is the same one as the second conjuration of CTH 766.2.1.

General information

This fragment is likely to belong to a draft tablet. It contains two conjurations. The colophon of the first one calls it “conjuration for washing a child”, which makes it likely that it should have been pronounced while the baby was being washed after its birth. The incipit of the second conjuration suggests that it is likewise related to baby care.
