History of publication

The fragment A₁ was published in transliteration in Starke F. 1985a: 239–240 and joined with KUB 35.107. This join was rejected in Steitler Ch. 2017a: 389. The fragment A₂ was published in transliteration in Starke F. 1985a: 245 as a pregnancy spell. The join A₁ + A₂ was published with translation and commentary in Rieken E. – Sasseville D. 2019a: 524–528 (note that this publication leaves less space between the joined fragments than the present edition).

Tablet characteristics

The left edge of A₁ is preserved. The fragment A₂ is indirectly joined to A₁ from the right, with the space of some three signs between them. If one believes this join, the Luwian text is followed by a Hittite colophon with large spacing between lines. This constitutes an argument for assigning the preserved fragments to column four, although the hypothesis of a small one-column tablet could not be ruled out.

Palaeography and handwriting

Middle Script

Text transmission

The fragment is found in Building A of Büyükkale.

Intertextuality

As noted in Rieken E. – Sasseville D. 2019a: 527 the conjurations KUB 35.145, KUB 35.143, KUB 17.15+ deal with the same type of demons and moreover list partially similar objects. The god Šulinkatte, which is mentioned among other gods in section 3, also appears in other Hittite-Luwian conjurations against the miasmas listed under CTH 765.

General information

Sections 3-4 contain the list of objects; they are preceded by the mention of the ḫuišti-spirits, which harm the ritual patron (section 2) and followed by the protective spell against the same spirits (section 5). The mention of the tongue(s) in the colophon is consistent with protecting the ritual patron against the miasmas as the overall goal of this conjuration.
