CTH 626.Tg37

Festival of Haste (nuntarriyašḫa-). Day 37

introductio

Kurzbeschreibung

For DAY 37, the outline tablets list two tersely phrased events: the division (or distribution) of the warḫušdu- tree and the stacking of unidentified objects, perhaps tables (Outline.7 – KUB 55.5+ iv 26′), as restored by Nakamura M. 2002a: 51.

Although several texts have been proposed as day-tablets for DAY 37, the present edition does not identify any manuscript that can be securely assigned to this day (see below).

History of publication

Nakamura M. 2002a: 137–139 provides an overview of DAY 37 (day 32 according to his numbering) and proposes several candidates for day-tablets. Apart from KUB 20.15 and KUB 51.29, whose identification is based on the sole fact that they mention the term warḫušdu-, he further suggests that KUB 11.8+ (CHT 661) – a substantial text describing offerings for the deceased Hittite kings – should be considered in this context. His attribution rests on two arguments: (1) the fact that the offerings described in the text are stacked on tables, is likely the reason for his restoration of the relevant passage in Outline.7, and (ii) his proposed reading of KUB 11.8+ iii 15 as wa-ar-ḫu-uš-du-wa-aš!? UD!?-ti ḫ[ar-pa-an-zi?] (Nakamura M. 2002a: 137), instead of the earlier reading wa-ar-ḫu-uš-du-wa-na-ti (Otten H. 1951b: 68).

On the basis of the available photographs, however, Nakamura’s proposed reading appears highly unlikely. Since both points in Nakamura’s argumentation – the restoration of Outline.7 KUB 55.5+ iv 26′ and the emended reading of KUB 11.8+ iii 15 – remain hypothetical, the texts attributed to DAY 37 in Nakamura’s edition are not included into the present study.
