CTH 626.Tg06.1

Festival of Haste (nuntarriyašḫa-). Day 6

introductio

Short description

Version 1 brings together manuscripts whose focus appears to be the first part of DAY 6, namely the morning in Arinna and the king’s journey to Ḫattuša, including two stops—one near Arinna or Matilla, and another in Kulilla. Only the final preserved portion of the text, the god-drinking rite, seems to take place in Ḫattuša. If this rite is indeed part of the great assembly, then this version would be considerably shorter than the others.

The version begins with the modest clause: “When the king in autumn returns from Arinna to Ḫattuša.” Since this journey also occurs on other days of the nuntarriyašḫa- festival, e.g., DAY 24, as well as during the AN.DAḪ.ŠUM festival, the attribution of these texts to DAY 6 is not entirely secure.

History of publication

Ms. A was attributed to DAY 6 and edited by Nakamura M. 2002a: 94. Ms. B, however, was initially identified as belonging to to the AN.DAḪ.ŠUM festival (Torri G. 2010a: vi). The new attribution to CTH 626, as well as the join between the duplicate fragments Bo 7389 and UBT 136, was made by Steitler, who recognized that (i) the mention of Kulilla corresponds also to the description of DAY 6 in Outline.5 of the nuntarriyašḫa- festival, and (ii) that the king uses a chariot to reach Kulilla. The latter implies a journey toward Ḫattuša rather than away from the capital (see Kryszeń A. 2016a: 44–48).

Tablet characteristics

Based on the line length, all mss. were originally three-column tablets.

Palaeography and handwriting

Mss. A and B are written in the New Script. Ms. C has been labeled a Late New Script text, but the fragment does not seem to exhibit any clear IIIc sign forms.
