Festival of Haste (nuntarriyašḫa-). Day 27

introductio

Kurzbeschreibung

The only day-tablets identified for DAY 27 of the nuntarriyašḫa- festival concern the celebrations of the Damnaššara goddesses, apotropaic deities sometimes interpreted as sphinx-like beings (see Güterbock H.G. 1961b with n. 21, differently Nakamura M. 2002a: 45f.).

The two manuscripts presented here partially overlap and are thus treated as representing the same version. The surviving passages describe a portion of the god-drinking ceremony during a great assembly in the ḫalentu- complex. Of interest is the unusually abbreviated phrasing of the paragraphs, in which the indication of the subject of the toasting rite is omitted.

The fragments have not been edited previously.

Tablet characteristics

Both mss. seem originally to have been three-column tablets.

Palaeography and handwriting

Both manuscripts were labeled as written in the Late New Script in the Konkordanz, likely on account of the form of ḪA, written with only one Winkelhaken. Note the subscribed form of UG but the unsubscribed form of AZ in KUB 20.53 (ms. A).
