Fragment with bird oracle by Kurša-Kuruntiya

introductio

Kurzbeschreibung

This fragment consists of seven fragmentary lines of a bird oracle report, carried out by the augur Kurša-Kuruntiya. The text contains parts of the introductory phrase “let the birds …”, of the flight report, and of the concluding interpretation by Kurša-Kuruntiya.

The previous edition (Sakuma Y. 2009b, II, 444) proposes several restorations based on rules of frequency and parallel attestations. Our edition is more conservative, and it includes only those restorations that are virtually certain.

The lower part of the fragment is blank, which means that this tablet, like several other oracle reports, included blank or partially blank paragraphs.

Palaeography and handwriting

NS (jh.). Too small for a meaningful palaeographic analysis. There are no evident late sign forms, apart from perhaps IT.

Historical context

The augur Kurša-Kuruntiya appears in several oracle reports: bird oracles KBo 40.49 (CTH 573.2) and KUB 49.58 (CTH 573.98); combined oracles KUB 5.25, KBo 53.110+ (KIN and augury), KUB 16.58, KUB 16.77, KUB 18.26, KUB 18.29 (extispicy, KIN and augury), KBo 2.6+ (extispicy, KIN, augury and Ḫurri-bird oracles, concerning Arma-Tarḫunta and Šaušgatti).
