Bird oracle for the safety of the King

introductio

Kurzbeschreibung

In the introduction to KBo 46 (v), the authors consider this text to be a letter with oracular content (“Brief mit Bezug auf Orakel (CTH 581)”). Although this fragment indeed belongs to a small tablet whose format is consistent with that of a letter, the first line is largely missing, and the content does not correspond to the expected address formulary. It is possible that this text is an individual oracle report, rather than a letter.

The beginning of the tablet contains an oracle question accompanied by a description of the problem under investigation. It asks whether the issue described (now largely lost) poses a threat to the safety of the king. The remainder of the tablet includes at least one complete bird oracle report (kola 9–16), whose outcome was positive (k. 8: “[Let the birds ex]clude (it)” > k. 16: “They [ex]cluded (it)”).

Following this report, a brief two-line paragraph describes additional bird movements, which may pertain to a control oracle. However, the introductory sentence for this section is lost, and the tablet ends with a description of a bird’s flight, without the augur’s determination.
