Bird oracle fragment, mentioning the Storm god of Zippalanda

introductio

Kurzbeschreibung

Small fragment of a tablet preserving minor portions of an oracle report. The end of the oracular question survives, featuring the formulaic statement: “let the birds confirm (it)” (line 1´). The topic of the inquiry or, alternatively, reference to prior question(s), would have come before this phrase in the lost part of the same line. The last line of the fragment introduces a new question (note the lightly impressed paragraph line dividing it from the previous text), which refers to the ‘Storm god of Zippalanda’. There is a possibility that a second line followed, before the end of the column, as potential traces of signs are visible in correspondence with the break. Nonetheless, this report was apparently very brief or incomplete, as the remainder of this line is uninscribed.

Tablet characteristics

A small fragment from the lower edge of a tablet, with portions of seven lines of text preserved. The tablet features a ‘Randeleiste,’ a flattened ruling surface along its edge.

Palaeography and handwriting

NS (jh.), according to HPM Konkordanz. Diagnostic signs: late form of URU? However, the fragment is too small for a meaningful palaeographic analysis.
