CTH 573.87

Bird oracles by Zella and Piyamu, mentioning Šaušgatti

introductio

Kurzbeschreibung

Little detail on the context of the oracle inquiries can be drawn from the surviving text. However, the people involved, namely the augurs Zella and Piyamu, and a woman Šaušgatti, mentioned in one of the reports (kolon 18), connect this text to a group of oracle reports that were the responsibility of a restricted group of augurs and that simultaneously involve this woman, who appears in several oracle inquiries (see Historical context).

Notably, Zella and Piyammu appear together in CTH 573.63, an oracular inquiry concerning the Zawalli deity of Šaušgatti. These two augurs also authored reports in CTH 573.80, a text with oracles on various topics (here, also the augur Uraddu appears). Piyamu is also found in another text about Šaušgatti, CTH 573.16. Zella, instead, appears in CTH 573.69 together with the augur Zapalli, again a text where Šaušgatti is the object of oracular investigation.

Historical context

For the sources referring to Šaušgatti, see the discussion by Hout Th.P.J. van den 1998c, 64-67. The name of Šaušgatti is found in a group of documents dating to the 13th century, all probably referring to the same person. Note that an earlier namesake had also existed, to whom other earlier texts should be assigned. The two Šaušgatti mentioned in the group of texts CTH 585 (Vows of Puduḫeba) might also have to be distinguished (Hout Th.P.J. van den 1998c, 65).

For other texts in the oracle corpus concerning Šaušgatti, see the editions of the letters CTH 581.1, CTH 581.3, and the bird oracles CTH 573.16, 573.63, 573.69.
