Extispicy reports

introductio

Kurzbeschreibung

This fragment, catalogued as a letter with oracles due to its small size and one-columned format, is probably not a letter but a report of extispicy inquiries. The readable text contains formulary from extispicy reports but presents several difficulties and unusual terminology. For example, “six turns of the entrails” (rev. 8´) is not an ‘expected’ formulation (usually eight, ten, twelve, rarely fourteen; Beal R.H. 2002f, 62–63).

Tablet characteristics

The tablet displays sections of text written in different cuneiform scripts (Trameri A. 2025a, 307 and fig. 13). The last three lines of the fragment (6´-8´) stand out for their cursory script and l. 6´ appears to be even more poorly executed than ll. 7´–8´. The paragraph line separating them, as opposed to the other ones, parallel and similarly executed, is irregular and somewhat follows the orientation of the script. This might have also been added at a second time, when the last section of the document was written.
