An oracle query concerning a washing rite

introductio

Kurzbeschreibung

The fragment is the bottom half of a one-column tablet, broken regularly along a paragraph line; the opposite side (reverse?) is broken off. It probably belongs to the lower half of a letter with an oracular question, or to an individual oracle report. If it was a letter, the missing portion would have included the address formulae and some context for the oracular question. The latter is difficult to understand, and our reading and interpretation differs from the only available edition (Warbinek L. 2020a, 310).

It appears that the question refers to the preparation of certain rites and whether the deity will be satisfied with what is being planned. Unless the question relates to past ritual performances, thus the investigation aims to verify whether all the appropriate rites were carried out.

Palaeography and handwriting

The tablet is considered NS (jh.) in the HPM Konkordanz. However, a palaeographic analysis is not conclusive. Additionally, the script is somewhat cursive, thus an analyis of sign forms is particularly difficult. While E might be considered a diagnostic sign for NS, there are no other ostensibly late signs, and apparent early forms are present as well, notably AḪ (uncertain), AR, IT.
