CTH 532.4

Fragment of Hittite monthly lunar eclipse omens

introductio

Short description

CTH 532.4 consists of a sole fragment of what was likely a tablet of Hittite lunar eclipse omens (A: KBo 34.119). No word for moon or eclipse is preserved, but the topics of the apodoses are found in other lunar eclipse omens such as CTH 532.3, CTH 532.5, and CTH 532.8. Other than e. g. CTH 532.3, the entries do not follow specific days, but entire months, as do the lunar eclipse omens in CTH 532.5.

Texts

Manuscript AKBo 34.119677/cBk. A

Literature from the Konkordanz

  • K.K. Riemschneider, DBH 12, 2004: 161f.

Tablet characteristics

Only a small trapezoid fragment from the middle of the tablet or the left column of the tablet survives. Where the tablet is intact, the surface is in good condition, but traces of textile give it a slightly smudged appearance.

General information

CTH 532.4 is a collection of Hittite monthly omens with – in all likelihood – lunar eclipse omens. The tablet probably belonged to the text CTH 532.5, but clear overlap and a word for ‘eclipse’ are missing. The text type is first found in Mari (ARM 26.248) and later in iqqurīpuš §§67-80. The apodoses are concerned with rain, flooding, and the harvest.
