Bird oracle (fragment) by the augur Tum[manima]

introductio

Short description

Fragment (constituted by two joining pieces) of the last nine lines of a bird oracle entry, preserving the fragmentary name of the augur responsible for the report (l. 9´).

As for his name, the reading by Sakuma Y. 2009b, II, 473 (Artummanna) is implausible philologically, as already implied D. Schwemer (KBo 41, XXII), who suggested a different reading, Tummana. This is a place name, spelled usually with TU (urutu-um-ma-na or urutu-ma-an-na, vel sim.). As an alternative, one also finds the place name Tumanta, spelled in one instance with TU₄/TUM (urutum-ma-an-ta, KBo 16.53, obv. 8).

Another possibility would be to identify this augur with T/Dumanima (mdu-ma-ni-ma), attested in KBo 48.28 (rev. III 13), a text with combined oracles. In this text, it is actually not certain whether this person is an augur, but the attestation appears right after a fragmentary bird oracular inquiry, and within the introduction of a new inquiry through KIN oracles. The text might refer to the results of the oracle provided by this augur. Thus, one might loosely connect the two persons through the oracular content of these two documents. On the other hand, one has to also take into account the different spellings, which might as well challenge this identification.
