Sakuma Y. 2009b, II, 550, suggests that =pat refers here to “only” the two eagles, but perhaps we cannot exclude that the two birds which fly in a new direction are the two which were observed first ( kolon 5).
Cf. Sakuma Y. 2009b, II, 550: “Ein [… ]-Vogel [paa ]r”. A new translation is suggested here for Hitt. wara-, which means ‘mate, companion (in a pair)’, an adjective rarely attested in singular (in detail Trameri A. 2023b). Sakuma Y. 2009b (II, 256-257) correctly observed that the word wara- must belong to the semantic sphere of ‘pair’, specifically in reference to birds, but the basic meaning ‘mate (of a pair)’ fits better with the use of the word in both pl. and sg., and the consistent verbal agreement. A translation ‘pair’ remains convenient for the plural. Probably ēpper here is a mistake for “flew” (paer), the expected standard formula.
Or, possibly: “a [pair of] ḫarrani- birds …”. In any case, ḫarrani- should be in accusative.
Tentative (lit. “seized it outside”); see also Introductio. The formulation araḫza ep- is attested in only few instances (see the fragments KBo 71.19, 8´ and KUB 49.4, obv. I 7´), and its exact meaning is hardly clear (see also HW2, E, 69-70, which mentions this passage). On gulzašša-/ GUL-zašša- see Starke F. 1990a, 462 (Luw. gen. adj. nom./acc. pl. n. ‘zum Zeichen gehörig’, (…) adverbially ‘einem Zeichen entsprechend/gebend’. Melchert H.C. 1993b, 107: ‘fatefully, ominously’. The sentence is somewhat parallel to the previous araḫza ep- (obv. II 4), with andurza presumably having the opposite meaning (‘to seize outside’ vs. ‘inside’). For another attestation (an-dur-za IṢ-BAT) see KUB 50.1+ III 16´ (CTH 573.54).
